A natural response is to change the word feminist to a word with fewer stigmas attached. But inevitably the same thing will happen to that magical word. Part of the radical connotation of feminism is not due to the word, but to the action. These days, as our threat to the old order increases, stereotypes about feminists seem to be more and more negative. Even among women peers, I find myself defending my feminist identity. I challenge them with three questions: Do you believe women should earn equal salaries for equal jobs? Do you believe women should defend other women if the need arises? Do you believe a woman should have the right to choose if and when she wants to raise a family? When they answer yes, I tell them simply, "You, too, are a feminist."
